This program is designed for registered nurses without previous
operating room experience. It consists of 72 contact hours of
classroom/laboratory training and 240 clinical hours, earning
the participant 83.5 contact hours. It is also designed to provide
the information needed for the nurse to demonstrate basic skills
and acquire the knowledge required of perioperative nurses. It
is generic and applicable to perioperative nursing in any location
or facility.
NEIT's Perioperative Nursing program is a nationally recognized program,
and it is consistent with the Association of Perioperative Registered
Nurses (AORN) standards. The classes are taught by professional registered
nurses who have earned the credential of Certified Nurse Operating
Room (CNOR). Lab classes are conducted in a simulated operating room.
Upon completion of the Perioperative Nursing program, the professional
RN will function as an entry-level practitioner.
Participants will attend classes at New England Tech's convenient
Warwick, RI campus. This training utilizes the AORN curriculum,
including all of the AORN materials required to complete the program.
The cost of the program is $3,495.00, and includes all materials.

Perioperative Nursing Program Overview
This operating room training is applicable for registered nurses without
previous perioperative nursing experience. The three phases of perioperative
nursing practices are addressed using the nursing process. The concentration
is on the intraoperative phase. The course is generic and applicable to
perioperative nursing in any location or facility. It is learner centered
and consistent with the AORN Standards and Recommended Practices and Guidelines.
It is designed to provide information required for the nurse to acquire
the knowledge, skills, and abilities of perioperative nursing. Upon successful
completion, it will provide 81.5 continuing education contact hours.
The learning objectives for this training are:
- Describe all components of the role of the perioperative
nurse when functioning as a circulator.
- Describe all components of the role of the perioperative
nurse when functioning as a scrub person.
- Discuss the process of disinfection/sterilization of
equipment/instrumentation.
- Describe the aspects of safety for the operating room.

Clinical Overview
The clinical experience is an integral part of the Perioperative Nursing
program. It requires placement of a professional RN in an operating room
setting. The professional RN will gain experience in the circulating and
scrub roles under the direct supervision of a dedicated preceptor. During
the clinical component, the professional RN will have the opportunity
to apply the foundation of knowledge and technical skills that are acquired
during the lecture and laboratory portions of the program. Upon completion
of the Perioperative Nursing program, the professional RN will function
as an entry level practitioner who recognizes his/her potential and limitations.
Clinical objectives:
Upon completion of the clinical portion of the Perioperative Nursing
program, the professional RN will be able to:
- Identify the role of the perioperative nurse and state
how this role assists in the achievement of desired patient
goals.
- Correlate the knowledge and skills of perioperative
nursing with clinical practice.
- Apply the principles of perioperative nursing during
the pre, intra, and post-operative phases of patient
care.
- Identify how the Association of Perioperative Registered
Nurses (AORN) Standards and Recommended Practices and
Guidelines are implemented in the perioperative setting.
- Recognize and practice the principles of aseptic technique
in the perioperative environment.
- Identify how the components of the nursing process
are utilized in the perioperative setting.
- Function as a cooperative team member for the common
good of the patient.
