The Surgical Technology Online Certificate Program is a 47-credit
program. Up to 25 of those credits may be granted by;
The remaining 22 credits will be comprised of seven courses to be taken
through New England Institute of Technology's on-line distance learning
program.
SCI 102 Introduction to Allied Health |
This course introduces students to the Allied
Health professions offered at New England Institute
of Technology. The course will cover topics generic
to health care professionals, including basic skills,
language and professional roles, and responsibilities.
|
ST 101 Introduction to Surgical Technology |
An introduction to surgical technology,
selected aspects of the roles of the perioperative
team, types of hospitals and insurances will be
presented. Principles of aseptic technique, standard
precautions, and surgical positions are presented
in class and simulated laboratory experience. Perioperative
routines including understanding a health history,
risk factors, informed consent, patients' rights,
physical diagnosis skills, and scrubbing, gowning,
and gloving are topics covered.
|
ST 120 Surgical Instrumentation |
The care and handling of surgical
instrumentation, instrument classification and
recognition will be presented. The various types
of sterilization methods as well as the proper
manner to prepare surgical instruments for decontamination
and sterilization will be included. Lab skills
will include how to properly load and unload a
knife handle, how to pass instruments correctly,
and how to wrap instruments for sterilization.
|
ST 130 Surgical Procedures I |
Fundamentals of surgical patient
care essential to the work in the surgical suite
are presented in class. Selected topics included
are wound healing, environmental design and safety,
biohazards, care of specimens, preparing and functioning
in a sterile field, instrument classification and
recognition, needle and suture classification,
draping, legal responsibilities, and skill acquisition
in gowning and gloving. Roles of team members in
the operating room are highlighted.
|
ST 131 Surgical Procedures I Lab |
Practice topics covered in ST 130
(Surgical Procedures I). Practice for skill acquisition,
and instrument recognition and handling is expected,
and the on-campus laboratory is open to students
for practice.
|
ST 200 Surgical Procedures II |
The knowledge, skills and professional
behavior of a surgical technologist are developed
in this course, which combines common health problems
requiring surgical intervention, surgical procedures,
intra-operative complications, instrumentation
supplies, aseptic and special techniques, etc.
Surgery of the abdomen, genitourinary, operative
obstetrics, gynecological surgery, cancer (breast)
surgery, orthopedic surgery, and intra-operative
medications are some of the topics presented.
|
ST 201 Surgical Procedures II Lab |
Laboratory practice of topics presented
in ST 200 (Surgical Procedures II) leading to skill
acquisition.
|
ST 220 Surgical Procedures III |
A continuation of ST 200 (Surgical
Procedures II), with common health problems and
surgical specialties, i.e., thoracic, vascular,
reconstructive, plastic, eye, and others. Clinical
experience in the operating room provides an opportunity
to develop skill in the full spectrum of the work.
An overview of the roles of first and second scrub,
first assistant, circulator, and the overall work
of the surgical service is included.
|
BIO 131 Clinical Pathophysiology |
An introduction to the processes
of disease and the effects on the body, and the
basic responses of cells, tissues, and organ systems
to these disorders. General phenomena such as inflammation,
immune response, and carcinogenesis will be considered
as well as a survey of disorders common to the
clinical setting characteristic of the various
organ systems using a system by system approach.
|
BIO 130 Pharmacology |
Presentation of the basic concepts
of pharmacology with emphasis on the biological
factors affecting the action of drugs, factors
modifying drug response, and drug interactions.
Basic fundamental principles of chemistry are covered
as necessary background material.
|
SCI 100 Anatomy and Physiology I |
A comprehensive study of the structure
and function of the human body as a whole, emphasizing
the normal, which will serve as a background for
the application of scientific principles both in
everyday life and in the work of various health
disciplines. Systems covered include integumentary,
skeletal, muscular, nervous, and endocrine with
respect to both histological and gross anatomy.
|
SCI 120 Anatomy and Physiology II |
A continuation of Anatomy and Physiology
I concentrating on circulatory, respiratory, digestive,
urinary, and reproductive systems.
|
ST 205 Advanced Topics in Surgical Technology |
Prerequisite: ST 200
This course includes basic terms and priciples of electricity,
physics, and robotics as they relate to safe patient care practices
in the surgical environment.
|
PS 201 Introduction to Psychology |
This course introduces students
to the basic concepts of psychology. Topics include
such areas as personality, intimate relationships,
development over the life cycle, and cognition. |
